The
Giro d'Italia Donne has faced it's first true summit finish today and
Marlen Reusser put in a strong performance to finish in the wheel of
Elisa Longo Borghini to defend her pink jersey. However,
Sarah Gigante won stage 4 and has jumped onto the podium.
The summit finish to Valdobbiadene provided 11 kilometers of difficult climbing, many of them paced by Anna van der Breggen who was perhaps too exposed to the wind. When the big attacks began the Dutchwoman didn't have the legs to respond and didn't make it into the decisive selection.
The winning move from Gigante came with 1.7 kilometers to go, an impressive attack which saw her gain 25 seconds on Elisa Longo Borghini and Marlen Reusser who finished second and third. The Swiss rider managed to retain the pink jersey.
