Sam Welsford still in blue one day after completing his Tour Down Under hat-trick

One day after his birthday, on which BORA - hansgrohe sprint star Sam Welsford secured a hat-trick at the Tour Down Under, he was able to rest his legs a little on today's climb to Willunga Hill. Welsford rolled across the finish line in the back of the pack, protected by his teammates Danny van Poppel, Filip Maciejuk and Ryan Mullen.

As expected, the real race took place elsewhere in the peloton today, as a new stage winner was found in Oscar Onley and a new overall leader in Stephen Williams.

Both managed to clearly distance Julian Alaphilippe and Simon Yates in the final meters and crossed the finish line at the same time, just ahead of Jhonnatan Narvaez, who took third place in today's stage.

Nevertheless, Welsford finished well and has another opportunity to collect a few points tomorrow. Welsford is still leading the points classification (sprint) in the blue jersey. Sam Welsford is clearly ahead with 90 points, ahead of Biniam Girmay, who has 77 points and ahead of Max Kanter from the Astana Qazaqstan Team, who has 54 points.
