Sam Bennett has finally been confirmed to stay in the peloton for 2024. After months of uncertainty over his future and next destination following
BORA - hansgrohe, he is one of the star signings of
Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team.
The French team have had it's team presentation today and revealed it's new title sponsor, colours and bikes. A proper show, but it came alongside a few other announcements - those are transfers. Several names were announced such as Victor Lafay and Bruno Armirail, but more importantly Sam Bennett.
The Irish sprinter was one of the best in recent years, specially with Soudal - Quick-Step, but had a fall-out with Patrick Lefevere and signed with BORA - hansgrohe into the 2022 season. His two years with the German team were however affected by periods of injury or lack of form. He did manage to win stages at the Vuelta a Espana and Eschborn-Frankfurt, however his results were inconsistent, despite the incredibly leadout work the team did, mostly from new signing Danny van Poppel.
A departure was more than certain after he was taken out of the Tour de France lineup and in June began a hunt for a new team. Not many were rumoured but the French team was among the names. However with a lack of tradition and current sprinters to help the Irishman it didn't seem a certain move. Today it's been confirmed as the two agree on a two-year deal.
