Route and profile Montréal World Championships 2026 men's and women's time trial

On the 20th of September, the World Championships will begin with the men's and women's elite time trial events in Montréal. This will crown two new rainbow jerseys against the clock. We take a look at its profile below.
On both men's and women's fields, the event was first held in 1994. Ameircan Karen Brems-Kurreck was the first female winner, and the first of several American riders to have achieved this feat throughout the event's three-decade long history. Jeannie Longo notably won four editions early on; whilst Emma Pooley also opened up the tally for Great Britain in 2010.
The modern era has seen Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk and Chloé Dygert win on two occasions, providing a mix of top riders each with their own major triumphs. Anna van der Breggen was the rainbow jersey in 2020; Grace Brown won in 2024 and most recently it was Marlen Reusser who won her first title at age 34.
On the men's side, it was Chris Boardman of Great Britain who took the very first title back in 1994, followed by Tour de France champion Miguel Induráin the following year. As the 21st century rolled around, dominant figures took over the discipline. Michael Rogers won it from 2003 to 2005; Fabian Cancellara won four editions from 2006 to 2010; Tony Martin won three times consecutively from 2011 to 2013 and then again in 2016; whilst Rohan Dennis was also crowned winner in both 2019 and 2020.
This trend has not yet faded, with Filippo Ganna winning in 2020 and 2021. Tobias Foss was a surprise winner in 2022; whilst from 2023 onwards it has been Remco Evenepoel who has won every single edition.

Profile Montréal World Championships time trial 2026
Montreal - Montreal, 39 kilometers
Both men's and women's elite time trial event will take place over the same route. This will be 39 kilometers in length, a sizeable effort, mostly flat through the streets in and around the Canadian city of Montréal.
The race begins at the bottom of the Avenue du Parc and head towards Old Montréal. The first intermediate point, which will provide essential information regarding the potential outcome of the race, will come 10.5 kilometers into the route at the Rue Estacade du Pont Champlain.
The riders will take on a few very exposed kilometers right by the water until they move into the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, on the Île Notre-Dame. The second intermediate point is placed where the riders enter the circuit, 21.5 kilometers in.
After racing through the famous track, they exist it and race back into Montréal. On the Place Jacques-Cartier, 29.5 kilometers in, the riders have their third intermediate point. The last few kilometers will take place in the urban streets of Montréal, heading back into Mount Royal.
The finale will be placed on the Avenue du Parc right by the start, only this time at the top of the avenue. The final 400 meters have a 6% gradient, meaning some seconds might still be won or lost in the dramatic approach to the line.

Originally from the Porto metropolitan area in Portugal, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Geography. His path into cycling journalism was shaped not through formal media training, but through independent reporting, community engagement, and sustained on-the-ground involvement in the sport.
Over the course of his career, he has conducted approximately 100 interviews across road cycling and cyclocross, ranging from one-to-one conversations and online formats to press conferences and on-site pre- and post-race coverage. His interviews include leading riders, team managers, and prominent figures within cycling media: Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Mathieu van der Poel, Primoz Roglic, Wout van Aert, Joao Almeida and Tom Pidcock; managers like Patrick Lefevere and Joxean Matxin; and YouTube personality Bryan Kennedy (BKXC)...
Within 18 months of launch, he helped grow CyclingUpToDate’s English-language platform into one of the most-read cycling news websites, built entirely from the ground up. As both a professional journalist and lifelong cycling enthusiast, his focus remains on delivering accurate, timely, and well-contextualized coverage.

- If you ride a bike and consider the behaviour of some in cars you can quite easily stretch your imagination a bit to see some part of their brain isn’t functioning properly. In fact, you also notice it quite often in amateur racing. It may be attitude towards risk and respect have changed over the generations so different generations may have problems agreeing what is normal today. Taking huge risks when it concerns only your life is poor judgement when it goes wrong, doing it when it affects others signals something went permanently wrong with judgement along the way, it’s less poor judgement than a complete inability or disregard for judgement or understanding of consequences. - So, I see despite my request that not only haven’t you reviewed your figures or commented since someone here did some better maths than you (thanks) but you made zero effort to think about the costs involved in collecting the fines. The original expression stems from written statements and promises that can’t be trusted but in the era of automation it received a second life when people started complaining about receiving bills (in the days when everything was done by post) to pay that didn’t cover the price of the stamp on the envelope let alone the costs of sending the bill, e.g rectification bills or utility bills for unoccupied lodgings. The minimum monthly salary in the poorest part of Switzerland is over 4000€ which sets employers back close to 6000€. UCI employees are unlikely to be on minimum salary, being sent abroad is likely to be associated with higher wages but also expenses to pay (travel & lodgings (different location every day), food & drink & a stipend) plus unseen expenses like insurance, min 4000km worth of fuel, etc. Then you forget office, admin & personnel costs, costs of enforcement and collection, accounting, bank fees, etc. run a company a while and see how money leaks out invisibly non-stop. Once there, a commissaire needs a vehicle, and a driver (can’t drive and officiate or write notes simultaneously) Up to stage 18 they fined 12400CHF, 3 stages left. EVEN if they sent only ONE commissaire, they’re not breaking even at this rate. With just 2, they’re losing. Of course by your calculation of raking in over 60k, yeah you could call it that way but you could also just write a fiction in your snazzy UCI office about a golden egg laying goose and earn far more from selling that than doing this, if it didn’t infringe copyright. Now, there is a possibility that these people aren’t even UCi employees but just officials paid fir missions. The going rate for that is 250CHF/day. Add 100 for hotel and 100 for expenses and you’re billing 450 a day for 30 days almost without the other necessary costs, same result.Mistermaumau10-09-2026
