Robert Gesink set for Giro d'Italia/Vuelta a Espana double in final season as a professional

After nearly two decades in the World Tour peloton, Robert Gesink's professional career comes to an end at the conclusion of the 2024 campaign. As such, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike stalwart has a big year planned.

“I will ride two Grand Tours,” the now 37-year-old tells WielerFlits about the plans for his swansong year. “After Australia I will ride a block with the Vuelta a Murcia, the gravel race in Jaén, Tirreno-Adriatico and the Volta a Catalunya. From Tenerife I will do the Tour de Romandie before I go to the Giro d'Italia."

The Giro won't be the only Grand Tour in Gesink's sights for his farewell year however, as the Vuelta a Espana also looms for the Dutchman. "After the Giro, there is a long intermediate section planned, in which I may do the National Championships in my final year. Then I will climb again to go to the Vuelta a Espana via the Vuelta a Burgos,” he concludes.

A former wearer of the Red Jersey and a stage winner back in 2016, the Vuelta a Espana has always been one of Gesink's favourite races, so to finish his career there makes perfect sense.
