The fifth stage of the Tour Colombia 2024, which included a 138.3 km route between Cota and Alto del Vino, saw Ecuadorian cyclist Richard Carapaz, of the EF Education-EasyPost team, stand out with an impressive solo victory.
In a thrilling finish to the Alto del Vino Special Category, Carapaz left behind his rivals, including compatriot Jonathan Caicedo of the Petrolike team, who came in second, and race leader Rodrigo Contreras of the NU Colombia team, who took third place.
Carapaz, with this remarkable performance, placed second overall, just 17 seconds behind the leader. "We raced in Chaves' home, it's a very nice memory" said Carapaz after his victory. "We knew we had a lot of options, we knew we could get there."
Despite Carapaz's victory, Rodrigo Contreras kept the yellow jersey and remained the leader of the Tour Colombia, thanks to his outstanding performance during the day.
