Richard Carapaz finished fourth in the ninth stage of the Giro d'Italia 2025, on a day where Wout van Aert became a winner again. The EF Education-EasyPost leader crossed the finish line alongside Giulio Ciccone, taking a few seconds off the rest of the big favorites for the overall classification of the race.
After the finish, speaking to Cycling Pro Net, the 31-year-old Ecuadorian assessed the day and gave his first impressions, "Well, we knew that today was a very complicated day and I think we saved it very well. It was a nice job by the team, who have kept me, especially the very dangerous part, in front. And well, it has helped us to be here in the fight".
He then said he was very happy with the result, which leaves him fully in the fight for the Maglia Rosa, "Yes, yes, the truth, very happy, I think today was to save the day and we did it in the best way". At the moment, Carapaz is fourth in the general classification, 1:40 behind Isaac del Toro, but only 27 seconds behind Juan Ayuso. He is also 45 seconds ahead of Primoz Roglic, the pre-race favorite for the overall victory.
