Results women's under-23 road race world championships - Home heartbreak as Viktória Chladonová beats Canada's Holmgren to take the title

The women's under-23 road race has been won by Viktória Chladonová. The Slovakian rider is the new world champion, having taken a sprint win over Canada's home favourite Isabella Holmgren.
The women's under-23 race was the very first road race of the event, and has provided riders with the first glimpse of this circuit in a world championships' scenario. The race was 134 kilometers long, starting and finishing in Montréal, fully focused on the final circuit. Nine laps of the shared circuit would be ridden.
The breakaway was formed by Wilma Aintila, Eliska Kvasnicková and Sofia Ungerová. The race was never really settled, with plenty attacks behind the breakaway from early on as the strongest teams began trying to influence the race with their own depth. Imogen Wolff was part of one of the first groups going up the road still with 83 kilometers to go.
With the extremely high pace from the start, it didn't take long for riders to withdraw from the race, whilst attacks were non-stop at the head of the peloton. Recently crowned World Champion Felicity Wilson-Haffended was also on the move with just over 50 kilometers to go, putting in serious pressure on the favourites.
Three riders above the rest
Crashes also affected the race, with SD Worx' Nienke Vinke (11th at the Tour de France Femmes) going down. The Dutchwoman was later on affected by a mechanical at a key point of the race. Paula Ostiz and Julie Bego were active; but with 30 kilometers to go three riders got a gap over the rest: Isabella Holmgren, Fleur Moors and Viktória Chladonová.
On the final climb, Holmgren's attacks saw Floors get dropped, with a two-woman battle for the gold medal to take place on the Avenue du Parc. Holmgren was the first to take the lead, but the Visma rider was hot on her wheel and in the final sprint had the legs to take the victory. In a sprint from a small group, Fleur Moors was able to take the bronze medal behind.
