Stage 7 of the Tour de Pologne has ended the Polish race and the outcome was surprising. In a World Tour event, Tudor Pro Cycling Team might have had the most successful day in its existence: Stefan Küng has taken his first win with the Swiss team whilst Marco Brenner overcame the odds to become the winner of the overall classification in the final time trial.
The final 12-kilometer time trial was always going to be decisive in the backdrop of a race without mountain stages. It was shorter this time around, but the tight gaps at the start meant that every second would count in the loop around Wieliczka.
Christian Scaroni set off with 3 seconds over Louis Barré, 5 over Bart Lemmen, 11 over Jan Christen; whilst Jan Christen, Finn FIsher-Black, Matteo Sobrero, Iván Romeo and Alberto Bettiol were all within 33 seconds - a gap that could be closed under such pressure.
Callum Thornley of Red Bull impressed with a strong early time over a course that was hard to measure with an uphill start. But it was Stefan Küng who was the fastest over the course, benefiting from the fast part of the course to take over the lead with an average speed of 51.9Km/h. The Swiss rider took his first win in the jersey of Tudor, much needed after a femur fracture in February kept him out of competition for four months.
And when it came to the overall classification, the final podium was all left out of the picture with modest times - Scaroni and the Visma riders had to settle for minor places. It was fourth place at the start of the day Marco Brenner who took the overall win, placing the seventh best time on the day and having the best balance.
He resisted the tremendous time of Finn Fisher-Black who was second on the day and finished on the same position in the GC; whilst Iván Romeo rode to third in the GC after a fourth place behind Thornley.
