It may seem like somewhat of a surprise but
until very late in 2025, Brandon Rivera did not have a contract for 2026, despite his breakthrough season with
INEOS Grenadiers. The British team ultimately decided to keep
Egan Bernal's right-hand man on board for this season, and now at the Colombian
national championships he himself had the legs to unexpectedly dominate the time trial.
Few would've expected Rivera to take the victory this afternoon in Zipaquirá, the home of
Egan Bernal, and even fewer would've expected the margins to have been as high as they were. Rivera did not just win the nationals but dominated the 44-kilometer effort, which took place at altitude.
Rivera won the race with 1:53 minutes of gap over Daniel Martínez of Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe and also Rodrigo Contreras of Nu Colombia. The podium consisted of the strongest riders on the day, but it cannot be ignored that even those who were left out have great quality; as Walter Vargas,
Egan Bernal and Harold Tejada finished consecutively behind, separated only by a few seconds.
