Tim Wellens claimed victory at Clasica Jaen Paraiso Interior 2026 after a long-range solo move that proved just strong enough to withstand a reduced but belated chase on the final sterrato sectors around Ubeda.
The race was ridden at relentless speed from the outset, with no stable breakaway allowed to form, and the peloton stretched repeatedly by constant accelerations. That early pressure proved decisive later, as the field fractured through attrition rather than a single explosive moment.
The race only fully took shape with just over 60 kilometres remaining, when Wellens forced his way clear from the favourites group. After briefly being joined by Mark Donovan, the Belgian pressed on alone, committing fully as the chase hesitated behind him.
Once isolated at the front, Wellens quickly built an advantage of more than a minute. Although the pursuit group behind remained sizeable for much of the finale, it never settled into a fully unified effort. Repeated attacks and regroupings burned energy without producing a sustained reduction in the gap.
A late chase forms but comes too late
Inside the final 20 kilometres, the chase finally narrowed to a select group, with Jan Christen, Thomas Pidcock and Maxim Van Gils emerging as the most consistent threats. The gap fell gradually rather than suddenly, dipping towards half a minute as the riders behind began to commit more decisively.
Wellens, however, remained composed over the final sterrato sectors, including the decisive passage of Mar de Olivos. Even as the margin tightened inside the final ten kilometres, the reduction came too slowly to overturn the advantage created earlier.
Wellens is the current Belgian national champion
A late crash for Van Gils disrupted the chase’s final sprint. A moment that proved decisive for the Belgian.
Wellens crossed the line alone to take his 42nd professional victory, with Pidcock leading the sprint for second place ahead of Christen in third. The outcome underlined a familiar pattern at Jaen: commitment on the gravel rewarded, hesitation punished.
