It was an excellent day for Soudal-Quick Step in
Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, with
Rémi Cavagna coming out on top in the ITT stage and his teammate
Mauro Schmid clinching the overall victory.
Cavagna finished the 18.6-kilometre-long course in a record time of 22 minutes and 12 seconds. “This time trial was my biggest goal here. It was a technical course, but I didn’t take any risks and just pushed hard on the straight roads so I could gain seconds there,” he said on his team’s website.
Starting off with a win and ending with another, the Frenchman had a remarkable tour that was a huge success. “I’m delighted with this performance, which netted my first ITT victory of the season after that close second in Algarve. I feel the form is there, and now I look forward to Pais Vasco”, said Cavagna.
Schmid added, “It feels special that my first win of the year came in the form of a stage race. I wasn’t sure I could survive the climbs, but I went better than expected these days. Two stages and the GC – we couldn’t be happier.”
