In recent years, Slovenia have emerged as one of the powerhouses in world cycling. As of yet however, a road race Rainbow Jersey has remained elusive. According to latest reports, in 2025, Slovenian cycling is set to pull out all the stops to win the World Championship road race in Zurich.
According to reports by La Gazzetta dello Sport, both Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar will be at the start line in Zurich and Slovenia send the big guns to Zurich, a formidable prospect for those rival nations also keen to take home the Rainbow Jersey.
Between the superstar duo, a total of nine Grand Tours have now been won in recent years by either Pogacar (1x Giro d'Italia + 3x Tour de France) or Roglic (1x Giro d'Italia + 4x Vuelta a Espana), including all three of cycling's biggest races in this calendar year. Not so long ago, such cycling domination by Slovenia would have been completely unheard of, but the emergence of Pog and Rog, plus the likes of Matej Mohoric, Jan Tratnik and others have ensured the nation's place amongst the modern cycling elite.
After three Grand Tour wins in the same year, World Championship title would surely put Slovenia as the undisputed top powerhouse in World Tour road racing. Whether the pair of undisputed leaders Pogacar and Roglic will be able to work together remains a question worth asking. Regardless however, if the report by La Gazzetta dello Sport proves truthful, it will surely be exciting racing.
Among the other expected contenders are the likes of defending champion, Mathieu van der Poel for the Netherlands, 2022 world champion Remco Evenepoel for Belgium, Mads Pedersen for Denmark, Matteo Jorgenson for the United States of America and Tom Pidcock for Great Britain among others big name superstars making the journey to Zurich.
