Positive news for Biniam Girmay as Eritrean escapes nasty Dwars Door Vlaanderen crash without serious injury

Biniam Girmay was one of a number of pre-race favourites to crash out of the 2024 Dwars Door Vlaanderen in as brutal, mass crash.

Whilst both Wout van Aert and Jasper Stuyven have been diagnosed with broken collarbones after leaving the race in the back of an ambulance, Girmay, who also was rushed to hospital has escaped slightly better than his rivals.

"Good news," reads an update by Intermarché - Wanty's official social media pages in the last hour. "Biniam Girmay and Laurenz Rex did not sustain any facture following their crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen."

In the end, it was van Aert's Team Visma | Lease a Bike teammate, Matteo Jorgenson who took the win, continuing his impressive start to the season after his recent triumph at Paris-Nice.
