The unsettled opening phase of Oscar Onley’s first season with INEOS Grenadiers continued on Wednesday, with the Brit abandoning the Tour de Romandie during stage 1 under unclear circumstances.
No crash had been reported in the race updates, and there had been no obvious pre-stage indication of illness, leaving his withdrawal without an immediate explanation. It follows a subdued start to the race for Onley, who had finished 79th in Tuesday’s short prologue, already some way off the early pace.

Another setback in a stop-start campaign

The abandonment marks the latest interruption in what has been a fragmented beginning to life at INEOS for the rider many expected to take on a leading general classification role. Signed off the back of a breakthrough 2025 season, Onley arrived with significant expectation, particularly as one of the team’s key British prospects for stage racing. However, his 2026 campaign has so far struggled to build sustained momentum.
A strong start at the Volta ao Algarve, where he finished fourth overall, suggested an immediate step forward within his new environment. But that early promise has yet to translate into a defining result, with subsequent races disrupted before they could fully take shape.
Paris–Nice provided the clearest example. Onley was positioned within the general classification battle early in the race before crashes and illness combined to force his eventual withdrawal, denying him the opportunity to test himself over a full week of racing.

Opportunity missed in Romandie

That context makes his early exit in Romandie particularly notable. The Swiss race represented another opportunity to measure himself against the leading general classification riders, including Tadej Pogacar, in a climbing-heavy environment suited to his strengths.
Instead, his race ended before the decisive phase of stage 1, removing him from contention before the key climbs had even been reached. With no immediate confirmation of the cause, the nature of the abandonment only adds to the sense of a campaign that has yet to settle into rhythm.

Still searching for a defining moment

For a rider who entered the season with growing expectations, the broader picture is not one of poor form, but of a year still waiting for clarity. The ability remains evident in isolated performances, but without continuity, those moments have not yet built into a complete result.
Romandie was not expected to define Onley’s season. But as another race ends prematurely, it reinforces the sense that his first months at INEOS have been shaped as much by interruption as by opportunity.
A more complete assessment will come later in the year, but for now, the pattern remains unchanged.
