In a cycling world that is full of talent in 2023, some talent are more promising than other. Team DSM is more than ever going down the road of top talent and development this season and Oscar Onley is without a doubt one of the leaders in that project. In de Leiderstrui spoke to 20-year-old Briton who is currently working hard to potentially replace great Romain Bardet as the team's leader one day.
At the same time, he is also working hard on his weaknesses. “I need to improve a lot technically. I have trouble with descents, I work hard on that. The team also lines me up to races like Strade Bianche to learn, for example for positioning. You have to face that the hard way."
Onley joined the Team DSM training team in 2021 and at the end of 2022 was already given a serious taste of the real thing. After a ninth place at Baby Giro and a stage win in the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d'Aosta, Onley finished seventh overall in Czech Tour. After a good Tour of Britain, the real introduction to the general public followed in the CRO Race. Onley punched twice to finish second overall behind Tour de France winner - Jonas Vingegaard.
