Giulio Ciccone put his well known explosive punch power to good use. The 28 years old Italian rider of Trek-Segafredo conquered the explosive uphill finish in the stage 2 of
Volta a Comunitat Valenciana. Ciccone struggled with some problems during his pre-season in recent years, but now the Italian informed that he spent the winter without troubles.
"I had a good winter. It's the first time I haven't had any problems. My fitness is already good, I want to keep it that way now. We still have nice goals ahead of us. I think we are on the right track, but for now we are going to enjoy the win first. After that, we will continue in the same way", said Ciccone on the post race interview in Volta a Comunitat Valenciana.
Ciccone staid mostly unnoticed in the group until the last 500 meters to launch an explosive attack that made nobody was able to catch him. The tactic was that and it worked perfectly.
"My team leader kept saying through communication: 'Stay between the wheels, stay between the wheels!' So I waited until the last corner. But my feeling was very good. I had very good legs. It was the first chance to win, so I am very happy to start the season like this", he stated.
Trek-Segafredo now has the command of the general classification of Volta a Comunitat Valenciana. But the team only has 5 riders, and it can be a disadvantage in controlling the tricky stages that are still to go. But Ciccone remains confident in his team.
"We knew before the start that we had a strong team. We only have five riders, but it's about quality, not quantity. Everything is still close together. As I said, we only have five riders, so we have to be smart. But we can control it. We will see what happens on the next climbs. I feel good, we'll see what happens", stated the Italian.
