In statements collected by Mundo Deportivo's colleagues, Miguel Indurain talks about cycling today with nonconformism, as he does not agree at all with all the data available to riders today.
For example, he is in favor of the earpieces, as he believes that it gives security to the cyclists: "I would take them away, because the riders, I talk to them, tell me that they want them, for security. They have pros and cons. The pros are security, knowing that they are connected to the team, knowing what's going on; and then there are directors who go a little too far. If the rider wants them, it's for a reason.."
Mind you, he would remove a lot of the information that cyclists receive today and that, in his opinion, goes against the sport: "I would remove more information that the directors have in the cars, today they have television and everything. They connect with people they have in the hotels doing big data and things like that. You could restrict all this information a little bit, so that it doesn't reach the director. Technology is advancing and you can't deny it.
Finally, he talks about his favorite riders who, logically, are similar to him: big riders and time trialists. "I'm looking for them. Dumoulin, who was one of the ones I liked, quit. I like more big riders, who are good time trialists. I don't dislike Ganna, but he doesn't like to race the grand tours. He would have the engine, but he should have the mentality. He's done his little things and he's still at it, so I'm still looking for my rider," concluded the five-time Tour de France winner.
