The penultimate stage of the Tour de l’Avenir delivered all the drama expected in the high mountains, with Jarno Widar taking a career-defining win in Tignes 2100. The Belgian rider emerged at the summit of a punishing Alpine climb that kept the world’s best U23 riders locked in battle until the final kilometer. His triumph has set up a thrilling finale, with the standings still wide open and suspense building ahead of the last stage. For Maxime Decomble, who now wears the yellow jersey, the pressure and opportunity are greater than ever.
For Widar, the day carried particular meaning. "That's why this means so much to me," he admitted, recalling how his race a year ago had fallen apart at a key moment. "Last year I had an off day at a crucial moment, this year it was once again one of the most important races on the calendar for me, so to win the queen stage feels special." His words reflected the weight of experience and the redemption he found in this victory.
Meanwhile, the Frenchman Maxime Decomble seized control of the general classification, overtaking pre-race favorite Paul Seixas. His delight was clear: “Wearing the yellow jersey on the eve of the finish is extraordinary,” he said, before adding that he was “in the form of his life.”
With one stage left to ride, Decomble knows he stands on the brink of the biggest result of his young career, though the mountains have shown how quickly fortunes can change.
National coach Serge Pauwels praised Widar’s progress, saying, "I think this victory is liberating. The standings might be completely turned upside down on the final day. But regardless of what happens next, the week has been a success for Jarno. The big step he's taking this year is learning to cope with setbacks and show resilience. In the past, he sometimes gave up too quickly, but he's clearly grown in that respect."
He added, "Some things went wrong this week too, but in the evenings I always saw a very calm rider. I tried to keep the pressure off, but the way Jarno is handling this week is simply fantastic."
