Biniam Girmay won the first stage of
Volta a Comunitat Valenciana. Everything was appointed to see a win of
Olav Kooij since he passed the climbs prior to the sprint and was the most accomplished sprinter present. But the
Intermarché-Circus-Wanty rider manages to outclass Kooij by launching a powerful sprint in a earlier moment that caught everyone by surprise.
"First of all, I want to thank my team, they did a great job today. I've actually been waiting a month for this win. I am already in good shape, because in Mallorca I was already close to victory. That's why it's great that it works now", said Girmay to Eurosport.
The Eritrean not only won the first stage of Volta a Comunitat Valenciana but got to wear the general classification jersey. He dismisses any fight for the overall of the race but doesn't put aside another stage win.
"The plan was to win a stage and I have already succeeded. Maybe I can go for another stage. For the general classification, we have Rui Costa coming in, I'm not going to do that", he revealed.
