Matthew Brennan tells Visma he wants yellow on day one of home Tour de France Grand Depart - but team stop short of guarantee despite five-win Vuelta debut

Matthew Brennan has already told Team Visma | Lease a Bike exactly what he wants from 2027: a Tour de France debut on home roads and the chance to take the first yellow jersey in Carlisle.
Five stage victories at the 2026 Vuelta a Espana have transformed the 21-year-old's case, but Visma are still stopping short of saying he will be given that opportunity.
Brennan left Spain with five wins from his first Grand Tour, becoming the first rider since Fons De Wolf in 1979 to reach that number on a maiden Grand Tour appearance. The breakthrough only strengthened an ambition he had made known inside the team long before the Vuelta began.
“I already said it to the team two years ago, when I heard about the UK start,” Brennan revealed during the race. “For myself, I’d really like to be there on the start line and to have guys like Wout and Christophe there also. If we can do the same thing as we did here, we can really try to replicate that into a yellow jersey on day one.”
Stage 1 of the 2027 Tour will run from Edinburgh to Carlisle, offering Brennan the possibility of beginning his Tour career in Britain and immediately fighting for yellow.

Five Vuelta wins strengthen Brennan's case
Brennan could scarcely have made a stronger impression in Spain. The Visma youngster won five stages across his first three-week race, combining repeatedly with Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte as he emerged as one of the defining riders of the Vuelta.
Sports director Marc Reef acknowledged the scale of that development after the race. “That he manages to win five times is really sensational,” Reef told De Telegraaf. “We knew what he had in him, but of course he took an enormous step in his development here.”
Brennan's own Tour plan would involve trying to recreate part of that successful Vuelta formula. He specifically mentioned Van Aert and Laporte when discussing the opening stage in Britain, with yellow already firmly in his thoughts.
Visma, however, are not yet promising him a place. “First of all, I think it is really nice to hear how ambitious he is,” Reef said. “But we will only look at the scenarios for next year after the end of this season. Then we will determine our goals for each individual Grand Tour and see which riders fit those goals. Matthew will certainly be in our thoughts.”

Tour selection at Visma has long been shaped around Jonas Vingegaard's general classification ambitions. Olav Kooij has already experienced how difficult Tour opportunities can be for a top-level fast finisher within the Visma structure.
The Dutchman established himself as one of the strongest sprinters in the peloton during his years with Visma but never started the Tour for the team. After moving to Decathlon CMA CGM, he finally made his debut in 2026 and immediately took advantage, winning Stage 5 into Pau.
Brennan offers Visma a different profile. His performances have shown considerably more versatility than those of a conventional pure sprinter, while the Vuelta also demonstrated how effectively he can combine his own ambitions with Van Aert and the wider team. But his five victories in Spain have not yet produced the answer he wants.
Brennan has made his preferred destination clear well before Visma begin constructing their 2027 Grand Tour squads. The Tour starts in Britain, yellow is available on the opening day, and one of British cycling's fastest-rising talents wants the chance to chase it.
