“Welcome to the Canyon family, friend," wrote Mathieu van der Poel on the announcement of Freddy Ovett as a new ambassador of the bike brand. Van der Poel's most regular training partner is not an Alpecin-Deceuninck rider but can now get to enjoy the same bikes as the World Champion.
Ovett is a rider with a very curious past, the 30-year old Australian is a specialized runner but has also spent seven years in cycling, mostly through Continental teams but it did include a trainee stint at BMC in 2018 and season and a half at Israel - Premier Tech's continental team. Since 2023 he has not been part of a pro team, but he continued to be one of the world's best e-sports competitors, finishing second behind Jay Vine back in February 2022, months before Vine had his breakthrough with two stage wins at La Vuelta.
Over the past four years Ovett has been an ambassador for Specialized and lives in the coast of Spain close to the cyclocross and gravel World Champion. Now, most likely due to van der Poel's influence, he's become a Canyon athlete.
