Having spent the week preparing for Liege-Bastogne-Liege over in the Spanish sun, Mathieu van der Poel had intended to do a first reconnaissance of the course this Friday but sadly bad weather has ruined those hopes.
This news comes from HLN who reports that "The exploration of Liège-Bastogne-Liège was planned in his agenda today, but the Dutchman adjusted his plans due to the bad weather. Van der Poel has only just returned from sunny Spain, where he was preparing for the last classic of the spring last week."
During his time in Spain, van der Poel recently joined a group of Dutch compatriots including Olav Kooij and Daan Hoole among others for a pre-Liege-Bastogne-Liege training ride. In stark contrast, weather in the Ardennes hasn't been great recently, as seen by what happened at La Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday as only 44 riders finished in apocalyptic conditions.
With the rain not expecting to let up by this Sunday's monumental finale to the Spring Classics season, we could another battle of attrition in Liege this weekend.
