Matej Mohoric won Milano-Sanremo 2022 with a beastly attack down the Poggio that is now cycling history. The Slovenian Bahrain Victorious rider arrives with a different preparation for the Classicissima 2024, however he believes he is fully prepared.
"I didn't go to Paris-Nice or Tirreno Adriatico to prepare for this race because I could also prepare for the Belgian classics after this race, I think it was the best choice also thinking about the following races. I feel good, I feel ready for the race, to try the opportunity if I can go solo," Mohoric told Cyclingpro.net
Ahead of the race, he made it clear that he thinks he can win the race again: "I think it's the classic, the monument that best suits my characteristics. I am 100% confident that I can win again. There are other riders who are more favorites than me but I will try to beat them."
Two years ago, Mohoric won this race with a daredevil downhill attack, after having caught up with the leading group right after the top of the ascent of the Poggio. With Tadej Pogacar and Mathieu van der Poel at the start, that would be the most realistic scenario for another victory.
Joxean Matxín commented that UAE was going to try to climb Cipressa at full gas to favor Tadej Pogacar, something Mohoric also believes would suit him very well:
"If they climb Cipressa at full gas it's better for me. The bigger the selection before the Poggio, the less struggle there is to get a good position on the Poggio and that ends up affecting the legs. So for me it's better that way."
