The second stage of Giro d’Italia Donne was held on Friday,
Marianne Vos was unable to defeat stage winner Elisa Balsamo and she had to satisfy herself with second place.
Vos seemed to be on her way to winning the stage, but Balsamo overtook her in the last meters."I have rarely had such a nice and calm preparation for the sprint. We planned to do a good lead-out and be in front together towards the final kilometer. That worked out perfectly," she said in a post-race interview.
"I started the sprint early; in the end, only Balsamo could pass. That was a shame, but we did what we could. Of course, I would have liked to finish it off today, but you also know that it can go several ways in a bunch sprint," Vos added.
"We got very close and there will undoubtedly be new opportunities. The classification is not a goal at the moment," the veteran concluded. She'll have opportunities in the coming days and seems to be on her way to take a stage win.
