Welcome to the Liveblog for the 105th edition of the Volta a Catalunya. The organisers have designed this stage for a potential sprint finish, but will that actually happen? The peloton has already shown its strength, and it will be difficult for a breakaway to succeed, but the final part of the day is tricky. - It started to go wrong for the French cycling doper Erwan Mentheour between Paris and Nice, when race officials tapped him for a random drug test. Just before the 1997 competition, he had taken EPO, an anemia drug that increases the number of red cells in the blood and thus an athlete's endurance. Mentheour's trainer and doctor swung into cover up, desperately trying to thin out his blood before he gave a blood sample. They started an IV drip of chilled glucose. They bled him. But still the bastard tested positive. He was thrown off the racing circuit...but not for long. He claimed that his red count seemed high not because he'd taken EPO but because he had had diarrhea and was dehydrated. Mentheour was back on his bike in two weeks. In fact, his excuses were all a sham for almost as long as he'd been racing. The French doper told NEWSWEEK, he had been taking drugs ("doping'') to improve his performance: "For two years I took EPO, growth hormone, anabolic steroids, testosterone and amphetamine... just about everything. - Pidcock has been great this spring. Consistency has always been the issue. Pidcock could be a real GT contender if he could maintain a good level of form. I'm not sure he wants that though? Maybe we are looking for too much. We should perhaps just enjoy the peaks when the come? It's true as his coach said, he could have won MSR.
