Lenny Martinez has made it a brilliant hat-trick of French climbing wins for Groupama - FDJ this weekend after firing to victory at the 2024 Tour du Doubs ahead of Clement Berthet and Jose Manuel Diaz on a brutal final climb.
Nine men formed the breakaway, the most notable of whom probably was Samuel Leroux (Van Rysel - Roubaix). As they neared the time the final climb towards the line began at Le Larmont, just four riders were out ahead of the peloton. Leroux, Federico Biagini, Johannes Kulset and Alexis Guerin, but with around 10km to go, Leroux decided to try and go for it himself, attacking clear to lead the race solo.
Holding around 40 seconds from the peloton at the bottom of the climb, the Frenchman fought bravely but with still over 3.5km of the ascent to go, he was caught by the pack, ending his long day out ahead at the front of the race.
As the leaders and pre-race favourites then came to the fore, just like on Friday afternoon, no one could match Groupama - FDJ's climbing superstar Lenny Martinez as the diminutive Frenchman completed a dream weekend for the team.
