Lennard Kämna previews Giro d'Italia third week - "If you ask me, Almeida is the favourite"

Sitting 7th in the general classification as we reach the second rest day of the 2023 Giro d'Italia, Lennard Kämna still hold an outside chance of taking the Maglia Rosa. In his opinion though, João Almeida stands out as the favourite.

"Until now, the Giro has mainly been characterized by bad weather and little action between the classification riders. Everyone looked at each other and didn't want to lose any time," the 26-year-old BORA - hansgrohe rider recaps in a rest day press conference. "I expected a bit more action, but I think last week everyone was a little bit held back. Anyway, my body feels pretty good and I hope to ride a strong final week. Spectacle seems assured."

Kamna currently lies 1:54 down on the leading general classification favourite in Geraint Thomas, no disrespect to Bruno Armirail although the Frenchman is surely set to pass on the jersey in the coming days as the race begins to climb. In his first Grand Tour as a GC rider, Kamna is enjoying seeing how he goes.

"We will soon notice how the legs feel after the rest day and then we can decide whether we are going to try something or not. For example, I didn't explore the time trial, so I can only say afterwards whether it suited me," he says. “I am very sorry that Tao Geoghegan Hart has dropped out, because he seemed to be the strongest rider in the race up to that point. If you ask me, Almeida is the favourite to win the Giro," he concludes.
