LATEST: CAS rejects Russian Gazprom-RusVelo team's appeal and it will continue to be unable to compete due to Ukraine war

The UCI has announced that the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) has rejected the appeal of the Russian team Gazprom - RusVelo against the UCI to return to competition. The International Cycling Union has released the decision in a statement:

"On March 1, 2022, the ICU took a series of measures in response to the military aggression of the territory of Ukraine for which the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus are responsible.

Among the list of measures, two of them directly affected the Gazprom-RusVelo team, which at the time was registered as a UCI ProTeam. Registration as a UCI team was withdrawn from all teams of Russian and Belarusian nationality, including Gazprom-RusVelo, and sponsorship of Russian and Belarusian brands or products was declared contrary to article 1.1.089 of the UCI regulations and, therefore, prohibited in any event on the UCI international calendar.

The team's paying agent, Provelo AG, filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on March 22, 2023, which has now issued its award rejecting the paying agent's claims in their entirety.

The ICU welcomes this ruling, which endorses the firm stance taken by the ICU in response to Ukraine's military aggression."
