Jonas Vingegaard had to suffer defeat from
Matej Mohoric in
CRO Race as the Bahrain Victorious rider secured the overall win with one-second advantage over the Tour de France winner. Vingegaard finished in the fourteenth position in the final stage.
"We knew Bahrain would try early on. We tried too, but I'm not quick enough to sprint alongside these riders,” said Vingegaard. He enjoyed eight second lead over Mohoric in the last stage but the impressive teamwork of Bahrain Victorious changed the rankings, with Mohoric on the top.
He was nowhere to be seen in the final sprint, whereas Mohoric was leading the peloton. "I am not a sprinter, and I don't want to interfere in peloton sprints", Vingegaard said. "I would have liked to have won here, but it is what it is. Mohoric picked up enough bonification seconds today, and he deserves it. This is also part of cycling.”
Overall it was a nice week for him with two-stage victories and second positon in GC. Now he looks forward to race in Tour of Lombardy. "I'm happy and satisfied with the form this week. I'm looking forward to the coming week. It's one of the main objectives this season,” concluded Vingegaard.
