Stage 7 of the Tour de France will finish atop the Mur-de-Bretagne. Whilst there is much discussion on whether Tadej Pogacar wants to lead the race at this point in time or not, it could well happen by the end of the day as most believe UAE will put on a chase to fight for another stage win in the mythical hill.
Before the start of today's stage Jonas Vingegaard was quite honest that he believes his rival will try to go for another stage win and more time on him. "No matter what it’ll be a tough day, but we expect UAE to go for the stage. It suits Pogacar really well, so we think they’ll do it. But we’ll need to see what happens at the beginning".
If this does happen it will be difficult for Vingegaard to match the Slovenian in a sprint and it could lead to a few more seconds lost in the overall classification, if bonifications are to be given out. Pogacar is also within 1 second of the yellow jersey of Mathieu van der Poel which could change hands.
Talking to Cyclism'Actu after the end of yesterday's difficult stage in Normandie, UAE DS Mauro Gianetti hinted at what should be another fight between the best for the stage win: "Tadej Pogacar likes it, of course, but also Evenepoel, Vingegaard, Skjelmose, Vauquelin... There's also Grégoire. There will be a great battle. But before we get there, we'll have to be up against the wall (translated from Mur, although Mur-de-Bretagne is a location and does not directly translate to wall, ed.) and there will be a lot of kilometers to cover".
"Being well positioned going into the race will be very important, because there will be several riders in contention. It's an iconic stage, so it's normal that it's of interest to a lot of people. I think Tadej Pogacar will also be motivated. But as I always say: we'll have to see. Between now and the Mur-de-Bretagne, there are still a lot of kilometers to go and surely a lot of attacks. Tomorrow will be a slightly different stage from today... but we can also wait".
