The Pan-American championships had their climax last night as the elite riders took to the road on the road races. From there two new champions have surged in
Jhonatan Narváez and
Lauren Stephens.
The women's race, taking place in the capital of Chile - Santiago - was won by American rider Lauren Stephens. It was a dominating solo win with over a minute of gap over the closest chasers Miryam Nuñez and Agua Marina Espinola.
In the men's race it was a tighter affair. The national team of Ecuador had the upper hand in the hilly circuit and managed to get two riders in the select group that went on to fight for victory. Richard Carapaz played a big role in setting up the win of his compatriot and former teammate Jhonatan Narváez who was the fastest in the final sprint. He beat Eduardo Sepúlveda and Eric Fagundez of Argentina and Uruguay respectively.
