Remco Evenepoel secured overall victory at the 2024 Volta ao Algarve on Sunday afternoon. A big thanks for this latest success on the Belgian's palmares must go to his teammate, Mikel Landa.
The last remaining teammate of the Soudal - Quick-Step leader, after a long-range attack from Wout van Aert saw the team obliterated in the chase, Landa's experience proved vital. "The race became crazy and difficult for us but stayed together, worked together and in the final we saved it," reflected Landa in his post-stage interview with Eurosport.
Throughout his career, Landa has more typically been a leader than a domestique. Nevertheless, in this new role, he gave his all to help his team leader. "I enjoyed it. I worked hard and we got the victory so I'm happy," the founder of 'Landismo' says.
"There's still pressure! It's difficult to be the last man for Remco no?" Landa laughs. "But I'm happy. In the end, it's all good for the team. The season is long and opportunities for myself with come later."
