“It would be a big error" to make Strade Bianche a monument says Philippe Gilbert

2024 will see the hardest-ever edition of Strade Bianche, including more 200km for the first time ever and 15 sections of gravel.

This route reveal has led to some talk of the race being added to the list of monuments. According to Classics legend, Philippe Gilbert however, this would be a terrible idea, despite the fact it would retroactively give the Belgian a fifth monument win.

"The Clásica San Sebastián and Amstel Gold Race are historically much bigger races,” Gilbert argues in a reply to a post via his official X (Twitter) account. "And it would be a big mistake to put 3 monuments in one and the same country when the UCI has been talking about internalization and even globalization for years."

Gilbert's victory at Strade Bianche came in 2011 and as mentioned, would retrospectively become his fifth monument win. What are your thoughts? Should the race be added to the elite list of monuments?
