Remco Evenepoel has powered his way into a commanding position in the general classification at the Volta ao Algarve with a stunning stage win in the individual time-trail of stage 4.
“If you win, it is always a perfect time trial and I felt pretty good from the start," the Soudal - Quick-Step leader assessed of his performance post-stage. "I already knew the course well, because we already explored it well on Monday, after we arrived after the Clásica de Figueira. I also did three reconnaissance laps this morning.”
“I knew all the turns by heart. That was necessary, because it was quite technical, with quite a few bumps and holes in the road. The bends were also tight, so you had to know where you could take risks and where not," Evenepoel, who was 16 seconds clear of his nearest challenger, Magnus Sheffield. "I had the perfect coaching from the support car and we had a perfect preparation this morning, so I think we can say it was close to a perfect time trial.”
What this means is that with one stage to go, Evenepoel holds a 48 second lead over BORA - hansgrohe's Daniel Martinez. “It will be important to be smart,” the Belgian previews of tomorrow. “First of all I want to defend my leading position, then I will see if I can take the stage victory. But the yellow is more important. We will see if there is still a stage victory.”
