INTERVIEW | Magnus Cort Nielsen looking to make an impact at Gran Camiño 2025: "I have been training well since the New Year"

This afternoon, Gran Camiño 2025 gets underway, and one of the most recognisable faces at the startline, is Uno-X Mobility's moustachioed star, Magnus Cort Nielsen. Ahead of the race getting going, the nine-time Grand Tour stage winner spoke exclusively to CyclingUpToDate.
First question was of course, about his expectations, not only for the opening stage finish in Matosinhos, but for the stage race as a whole. "Today, I hope for a bunch sprint and to be there myself," previews the 32-year-old honestly. "But in general? I think it will be really hard racing, already after today. The next few days are always up and down, and there are a lot of small teams that for sure will want to make the race every day. So there will be some good racing coming up!"
Now in his second season with Uno-X Mobility, the vastly experienced Dane has been using his winter off-season to build up preparation for what he hopes will be a big campaign to come in 2025. "It's been good lately. I had some knee problems in December, but I have been training well since the New Year," he explains to us.
And with the Tour de France wildcard still far from certain for Uno-X in 2025, it may turn out that the Spring Classics are where we see Cort Nielsen thriving against the best in the world. "Not to much," he answers though, casting a little doubt on that idea. "I'll be doing Milano-Sanremo, but then I'll be taking a little break," he concludes.

- Yeah, sorry, you said it yourself, it’s the Olympics, not a WC, not a Tour, not a monument, not a team event, not a cycling gala. A once every 4 year event to bring nations together to celebrate the diversity of sport, so what if breakdancing has been included instead of 30 more cyclists who are paid pros? Know your Olympic history, remember drawing? The whole reason of the Olympics is for mainstream public to discover sport they rarely notice, for sports to showcase themselves to public that doesn’t usually watch and in order for athletes from lower ranked nations to participate with the elite for once. The US (now Jamaïca) have known this problem since dominating sprinting but there is no solution, you cannot resolve the Celebrate every nation vs Have only the best equation, it has to be a mix. Already nations with more than 1 cyclist have an advantage, being able to work as a team. As for those countries that can’t keep up, all the better for the elite’s chances, don’t knock it, and sorry but if you allow a Kiesenhofer to win gold, you don’t deserve any medal as an elite. - Bolt was an outlier, for some people it can’t exist. Funny thing is 3 generations later, a lot of amateurs reach the level the average pro had. Ok, maybe counting from today it might be 5 or 6 generations because we won’t all have access to the equipment and staff and assistance pros now need to perform.Mistermaumau10-04-2025
- Actually, I’ve not noticed that fans have even noticed results are provisional so as far as the sport itself goes, I wouldn’t worry too much. Obviously some riders will miss out on celebrating but then these days, they’re all paid so well that it’s quite a small price to pay. Andy Schleck certainly didn’t get to party like he was used to when he received Alberto’s trophy and titles, nevertheless, he’s in the books and I’m sure he feels like and gets treated like a tdf winner.
