"I'm not sure if gravel sections have a place in a road race like the Tour de France" - Matej Mohoric

Matej Mohoric has talked to RTV Slo during his off-season in Slovenia where he talked about doping, Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, but also the upcoming Tour de France's gravel stage and goals for 2024. Some of which he already announced, but a few he puts further emphasis on.

"I don't know if they are necessarily happy if someone resigns because then they lose the overall favorite. So the following stages lose their charm, where the race is supposed to be decided, in the mountains," Mohoric told the Slovenian news outlet. "One year it happened that only Nibali remained. When Nibali won, everyone else who was the pre-race favorite fell. It wasn't the best advertisement for the race itself. We don't want that. I'm not sure if gravel sections have a place in a road race like the Tour de France."

Despite this he should be a big favourite for that day, as he's set his sights on the Tour and is the reigning Gravel World Champion. He looks to succeed in the spring classics mostly and one of his main goals also includes gravel racing in Strade Bianche. However, he continues to wish and prepare for victories at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix.

"I hope that one day, in addition to Sanremo, I will be able to win the Tour of Flanders or the Tour Paris-Roubaix. Of course, even though I have a royal tradition, the Strade Bianche race also carries prestige. So it will definitely be one of the goals for me next spring."
