As the E3 Saxo Classic kicks off today, one of cycling’s biggest names is noticeably absent: Tadej Pogacar. After their breathtaking duel at Milano-Sanremo just days ago, Mathieu van der Poel had been hoping for a rematch on the cobbles of Flanders. Instead, the world champion lines up without his closest current rival.

"He would have made it easier for me, because he always makes the race hard. I like to race against the strongest riders," van der Poel told Wielerflits, expressing clear disappointment at Pogacar’s last-minute withdrawal from the race.

The Slovenian’s aggressive style would have helped animate the race, something van der Poel relishes. Still, he remains fully focused on the task ahead.

"Rain is predicted in the last hour, so as a team we have to try to keep control for as long as possible," he said, acknowledging the unpredictability of E3’s weather and terrain. "On a course like today, that's difficult. Other teams will try to create a surplus, so that's difficult. Although the focus remains the same of course."

Despite Pogacar’s confirmed appearance at Paris-Roubaix in April, a race van der Poel won in 2023 and 2024, the Dutchman isn’t losing any sleep over their upcoming showdown.

"No, I don't fear him. If you fear someone, that is never a good sign."
