BORA - hansgrohe's Sergio Higuita may have taken the win on stage five of the Itzulia Basque Country, but the Colombian seemed as surprised as anyone that he managed to hold of the rest of the bunch after starting his sprint early.
"It was a very tough stage today. But I knew I would have a very good chance of a top result. I knew the finish well, and when I saw the opportunity in the final, I took it with both hands," Higuita revealed post-stage. "Actually I started my sprint a bit too early, but in the end I was strong enough to keep the lead. I am very happy to give the team a second stage win."
After Ide Schelling's victory on stage two, BORA - hansgrohe have had a fairly successful race. "It's always nice to win in this competition, because I have great memories here." says Higuita. “After a few not so easy months, this stage win and my podium finish in the GP Indurain gives me more confidence. It's hugely motivating for me and the team."
With one stage remaining on the Itzulia Basque Country, tomorrow looks set for a hectic battle as anyone within touching distance of race leader Jonas Vingegaard will try to impose themselves on the stage and snatch the overall win.
