EOLO-Kometa riders Lorenzo Fortunato and Vincenzo Albanese were counted among the top favorites in advance in the battle for the mountains classification and the points classification respectively.

After nine stages, Fortunato has been saving up his energy for second and third week as that's the main focus of the Italian team. Albanese, on the other hand, showed himself several times in front, finishing fourth on the stage to Lago Laceno in the opening days of the race. Albanese has already finished 4th twice and 7th once in this Giro d'Italia.

In the second week of the race, there are a number of transition stages on the menu. Many cycling followers will agree that the versatile Italian has circled a number of those stages in dark red. The advantage of his versatility is that he sometimes appears in stages where no one expects him, as witnessed by his fourth place in the mountain stage earlier in the race.

When In de Leiderstrui asked him which races in the second and third week he wanted to perform at his best, he made no secret of his preferences. "I do have a cold, so I have to see how it develops. But I see two or three stages that should suit me. Especially stage 14, towards Cassano Magnano, appeals to me. I also hope to be able to show a good sprint in the final stage in Rome."
