A proven Vuelta a Espana stage winner, Kaden Groves added another triumph at the Spanish Grand Tour to his palmares on stage 2 of the 2024 edition, edging out Wout van Aert in a powerful bunch sprint finish.
"This year's parcours is really quite difficult," notes the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter, paying reference to the limited number of sprint opportunities at the 2024 Vuelta a Espana and the almost non-existent amount of 'flat stages' this time around. "So we really only had today and tomorrow and a few opportunities in this first week, so I felt really big pressure to perform today."
Whilst Groves has multiple Vuelta a Espana stage wins under his belt in recent seasons, even winning the Green Jersey in 2023, the Australian has struggled for form in 2024. So much so, that this was his first win the Spanish Grand Tour twelve months ago.
"I think it's been a number of reasons. I had an injury in the spring and missed a lot of racing," he explains of his limited number of results of late. "I returned to a really good level for the Giro, but in the end was not fast enough to beat Jonathan Milan or Tim Merlier. That kept me really motivated and working hard to come to a race like this, which suits me super well."
