Stage 5 of the 2024 Itzulia Basque Country went down to an incredibly close sprint finish on Friday afternoon. In the end, Groupama - FDJ's Romain Gregoire took the win, although he was far from certain himself.
"After the finish I didn't know I had won," the 21-year-old Frenchman admits in his post-stage interview. "hat was stressful, but this victory is certainly one that counts. Of course I am very satisfied. It was a madhouse today, with quite a fight in a fast stage."
In a messy finale, Gregoire took the narrow win ahead of Orluis Aular and Max Schachmann, with the Groupama - FDJ star quick to thank Quentin Pacher for his expert leadout in the finale. "I was taken along ideally by Quentin," he concludes warmly.
