Héctor Carretero and Giovanni Carboni will no longer compete in the bright green outfit of Equipo Kern Pharma in 2024. The Spanish formation waves goodbye to the Spaniard and Italian on social media. It is still unclear what the future holds for Carretero and Carboni.
The now 28-year-old Carretero rode for Movistar for the first five years of his professional career, but at the end of 2021 decided to try his luck at a slightly lower level, at Equipo Kern Pharma. The Spanish climber hoped to be able to ride more for himself with this team, but it turned out to be two lost years for Carretero. The rider has struggled with injuries in recent years and, partly because of this, did not reach his best level.
Carboni, also 28, joined Equipo Kern Pharma in September 2022 and achieved several places of honor in his only full season for the Spanish formation. The Italian climber finished fifth in the Volta ao Alentejo or tenth in the Trofeu Joaquim Agostinho. However, this turned out not to be enough for a contract extension.
Equipo Kern Pharma is therefore saying goodbye to Carretero, Carboni and likely six other riders, but has also already made significant purchases for the new season. The team managed to attract eight new riders with brothers Hugo and Unai Aznar, Marc Brustenga, Miguel Ángel Fernández, Jorge Gutiérrez, Unai Iribar, Jesús Antonio Soto and Diego Uriarte.
