Biniam Girmay has been crowned African Cyclist of the Year 2024, capping off a remarkable season that has left an incredible mark on the sport. The Eritrean star's achievements throughout the year have not only been a show of his talent but have also inspired a new generation of cyclists across the globe.
Girmay’s historic season included winning the green jersey at the Tour de France, where he also claimed three stage victories. Adding to his accolades, he secured five wins and stood on the podium 16 times across four continents, and is very deserved of his current title of the best sprinter on the planet.
Most notably, Girmay became the first African rider to win a classification at the Tour de France, by winning the points classification. His rivalry with Jasper Philipsen is hopefully only in its early stages, and we hope next year's Tour de France will see more of the same.
Finishing the year ranked ninth in the UCI World Rankings, Girmay has solidified his place among the sport’s elite, with his accomplishments continuing to elevate African cycling to new heights. Intermarche - Wanty were hugely reliant on Girmay in 2024, and will be hoping for more of the same in 2025.
Congratulations Biniam Girmay, named African Cyclist of the Year 2024 🏆🇪🇷
