“He passed away two weeks ago. I want to dedicate this victory to him” - Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini tributes stage win at the Tour de Suisse Women to Grandfather

Eleonora Camilla Gasparrini took the biggest win of her career to date on stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse Women, in a thrilling finale that saw the remainder of the day's breakaway caught in the final 100m.

“I am very happy, because it is my first big win. I really can't believe it," the 21-year-old Italian from UAE Team ADQ revealed in a post-race interview. "The team rode great today. My teammates really helped me and I have to thank them.”

The remaining breakaway rider had been Urška Žigart, the girlfriend of Tadej Pogacar. But it was heartbreak for the Slovenian as the peloton came roaring past as the finish line was almost in touching distance.

“I felt good on the first climb of the day and on the last climb I was still in the first group. I knew then that I had a chance to win. These arrivals suit me well. I really can't believe I'm taking the win here today. Tomorrow is an even tougher stage on the program, but we will definitely try again," Gasparrini recapped before dedicating the win to her Grandfather who she has recently lost. “He passed away two weeks ago. I want to dedicate this victory to him.”
