Although it hasn't always been the case through this Vuelta a Espana, Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard were fully supportive of Sepp Kuss and his Red Jersey challenge on stage 18. Speaking afterwards, the Dane revealed his delight at being able to pay back Kuss for his loyal work over the years.
“I think everyone could see today that it was all about protecting Sepp,” the two-time Tour de France winner told Eurosport. Vingegaard sits in second position in the general classification, now 17 seconds behind his American teammate following stage 18. “There will be another tough ride on Saturday. We also have to be careful there and keep fighting until Madrid."
Whilst Jumbo-Visma have been heavily criticised for their tactics over the past few stages and the perceived notion that Vingegaard and Roglic were attacking Kuss, the pair were in full domestique mode on stage 18, supporting the Red Jersey.
“It's nice to pay him back. He has done so much for me and Primož," Vingegaard said with a smile. "I would like to pay him back, also on Saturday.”
