After Astana Qazaqstan Team's Vadim Pronskiy was the only overnight non-starter, Groupama - FDJ's Clement Davy has now become the first abandon of the day on the queen stage of the 2024 Giro d'Italia.
The first man out the back of the peloton as the climbing began, the 25-year-old Frenchman was struggling very early, with such a big day ahead of the riders. A few moments later, it was confirmed that rather Davy had stepped off his bike and left the race altogether.
In the third Grand Tour of his career, Davy is known more for his time-trialling abilities rather than his capabilities going uphill. In the stage 14 time-trial on Saturday, the Frenchman set the 36th quickest time in a respectable if unspectacular effort, similar to the 31st placed finish he achieved on the stage 7 individual time-trial earlier in the race.
The exact circumstances surrounding Davy's abandon are not yet fully known, although with illness running rampant within the peloton that is possibly a reason for his lesser legs.
