Derek Gee was perhaps the most surprising breakthrough of the whole Giro d'Italia. The breakaway hunter joined breakaways a whole seven occasions, and finished second on four days without winning a stage. His tenacity has rewarded him with a trip to the podium in Rome.
The Israel - Premier Tech rider was one of the stars of the race, achieving results that were quite astounding for the Israeli team. Four second places and two fourth places from breakaways, and finished second in the KOM, points, intermediate sprint and breakaway classification altogether. The combativity award was the acknowledgement of a strong race.
