Intermarché - Wanty's Georg Zimmerman has secured the overall victory at the 2025
Giro d'Abruzzo after UAE Team Emirates - XRG's
Ivo Oliveira managed to take the win on the final stage in Isola del Gran Sasso, his second win of the race.
A very strong breakaway went clear early in the day. Nine riders in total, including notable names such as George Bennett,
Sjoerd Bax, Alessandro Tonelli, Ivo Oliveira and Martin Marcellusi. With the peloton already within 30 seconds at 50km to go though, the break was starting to crack under the pressure and threatening to split up relatively early.
After things settled down again slightly, the break re-extended their advantage to up over a minute. When a seemingly planned move by UAE Team Emirates - XRG duo Julius Johansen and Pablo Torres at 40km to go reignited the action at the front of the bunch though, the gap to the break began to come down dramatically once again, although the move ultimately wasn't able to split the GC riders in the peloton.
Inside the final 20km, things started to explode again in the breakaway as Bax attacked his companions, with only Oliveira able to follow. With the duo holding more than 15 seconds over the remainder of the break and around a minute on the peloton into the last 15km, hopes of a stage win were growing. By 5km to go, their advantage over the peloton had been cut to just 28 seconds. At 1km to go, it was 19 seconds for the leading duo and that proved enough for the stage win, with Oliveira outsprinting his former UAE teammate at the line.
