UAE Team ADQ leader Elisa Longo Borghini has taken a heroic solo victory at the 10th edition of Brabantse Pijl WE, narrowly holding off the peloton in a thrilling finale.
After the peloton split at around the 50km to go mark, by the time the lead group headed into the 30km, an elite seven woman group composed of Brodie Chapman, Niamh Fisher-Black, Eva van Agt, Anne Knijnenburg, Jade Wiel, Steffi Haberlin and Monica Trinca Colonel held around a 40 second advantage over the peloton. Soon after though, a counter-attack led by Elisa Longo Borghini attempted to increase the lead group's numbers. With 21km to go though, all the attackers had been swallowed up by the peloton ahead of the final lap.
Despite attacks by Riejanne Markus and Kristen Faulkner early on the last lap, things were still largely all together as they reached the Moskesstraat for the final time. On that climb however, Longo Borghini launched again, summiting solo with a clear lead into the final 9km. By 5km to go, the Italian national champion had stretched that lead to around 25 seconds. Although the chase were working hard behind, Longo Borghini wasn't losing too much ground - 21 seconds ahead at 2km to go. With the final kilometre slightly uphill, the Italian still had work to do and as she finally began to tire, the chase was closing in fast. It wasn't fast enough though as Longo Borghini heroically held on for the win ahead of Marianne Vos and Femke Gerritse from the bunch.
